László Attila

László Attila

The guitarist-composer Attila László is one of the leading figures of Hungarian jazz, having performed with artist such as Anthony Jackson, Randy Brecker, James Moody, Tommy Campbell, Dave Friedman, Gary Willis, Hiram Bullock, Bob Mintzer. He has been professor and head of the in-house big band at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music since 1987. From 1999 til 2005, László was Chairman of the Hungarian Jazz Federation. His outstanding carrer was illustrated by numerous awards, among which László received a Liszt Award in 2003.

He founded the Attila László Band in 1992. Their distinctively intoned contemporary jazz is mainly written by László himself with sensitive harmonies and a finely layered orchestration, but also showing a clear affection for dynamic and energy. The rhythm section often counter balances the melodies, and under the soft tunes, a pulsating accompaniment appears. This dualism makes this band so individual.

All members are exceptional musicians, Kálmán Oláh on the piano, Mihály Borbély on the saxophone and also playing the characteristic Hungarian folk instrument ‘tárogató’, Béla Lattmann on the bass, and Péter Szendőfi on the drums.

The musicians describe their music as ‘organic jazz’, as their music is so heavily built upon their personalities. They individually work different influences into the band ranging from modern swing to pulsating 8th-note music and world music, creating a very lively and characteristic sound.

In January 2004, the Attila László Band went on a mini-tour around USA, including a special concert, where UN commissioners from over forty countries sat in the audience.

In 2006, a new formation was born, the Attila László Quintet. This band consists of some of the best talents of the new Hungarian jazz generation: Emil Jellinek (Emilio) sings, Kálmán Oláh plays the piano, Gergõ Borlai pulls the listeners along with his virtuoso drumming, and also in the band is Attila László’s great musician partner Béla Lattmann on the bass – with whom they have been creating music for thirty years now. The dynamic grooviness of the Quintet explores different paths from the Attila László Band, but with both formations, Attila László’s intention is – through one way or another - to stir up the soul of people. The fantastic debut album of the band ‘Just trust’ does exactly that.
